Ecological work

Ancient veteran trees, dead and dying trees play an important role in the functioning of the ecosystems of trees, provide a vital habitat for wildlife and enhance biodiversity.

We are highly experienced at all aspects of ecological tree work including the skilled methods of veteranisation and monolithing.

Veteranisation describes a selective pruning technique which accelerates the natural ageing process of a tree, thereby providing niche habitat for decaying wood organisms. Coronet cutting is also used with the aim of enhancing dead wood habitat by leaving the tree looking as natural as possible to create pockets or niches for fungi, lichen and insects to colonise.

A standing dead or decaying tree can be turned into a Monolith by reducing its height and spread, and generally making it safe.
